ABOUT THE ARTWORK

2020
Pen and ink

A4

For a period of time, my world was rather small. Thankfully, the Werribee River was part of that world. It was a saving grace at a time when many things seemed against me. Walking the river was a daily occurrence in those days and my phone was always with me - ready to photograph anything that caught my eye.

Two magical trees stand astride the river, not far from my house in Werribee. As you walk towards them, these trees seem well-rooted and immovable. But, as you walk nearer and pass them, a dance occurs and the magic happens - the trees exchange places.

Twice now, these trees have appeared in my artworks. The first time as a large chalk pastel drawing - and now here, as a small pen and ink drawing. Usually, I use a black fineliner pen but this time, I switched to a sepia coloured pen. I entitled the work ‘Across the River’ based on the view that can be seen through the frame of the two magical trees. Walking the path and stopping, I looked across the river to ponder ‘the other side’ and thought about future freedom and life beyond constraints.
