Botanical art is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful and highly skilled categories of art. I have always admired botanical artists and their craft. However, until recently, I viewed botanical art as unattainable for myself - thinking this particular kind of artist was in a class too lofty to reach. But, my view on this changed when a brother and sister that I teach online asked if we could try painting an iris flower. I knew that mine would turn out okay and yet I wasn’t overly confident in how much like the real thing it would look in the end. My eyes were my teacher as I carefully examined the colours, tones and textures, the lines, shadows and contrast. As the work drew near to completion, I realised that I had done something that I had always viewed as out of my reach.
‘Blue Dutch Iris’ is somewhat of a milestone artwork for me - signifying a growth in confidence and the realisation that there are probably many things that I have thought unattainable in my life that could be achieved if I took a leap of faith and gave things a go. Visually speaking, I love this artwork for its flowing lines and beautiful form. It cannot help but point to the Great Designer - the God of beauty.
