Magnolias evoke memories of sitting in my grandparents’ lounge room as a boy and beyond, eating all manner of sweet treats that my grandma had baked, enjoying warm conversation surrounded by elegant decor. On one of the walls hung a beautiful, serene painting (a print in this case) framed in an ornate gold frame. The original version was painted by an artist named Vesty Rich and it featured a magnolia sprig resting on a turquoise coloured reflective surface. I have the framed print now that my grandparents are in their true, eternal Home. The work is beautiful in its own right but the memories of times spent with two of the dearest people on earth to me make it all the more potent.
Given my love of magnolias, it would be no surprise that they have featured in a number of my artworks and have been the object of study for my art students at various times. On one of these occasions, I decided to create a similar feel in my example to that of my grandparents’ print. A magnolia sprig rests upon a sea of turquoise - this time in watercolours rather than oils.
This image will be printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® paper (308 gsm) to best suit the original medium.
